Things I Found Interesting #1

The Philosophical Argument for Working Less (And Wasting Time) [Medium post]

The part of “If you give yourself enough time to relax, soon, you will find yourself wanting to express a spontaneous force of creativity, the kind that you usually suppress when busy or working.” rings very true to my own personal experience. There is also a thesis / observation that we can only achieve ~4h of focused time a day and should aim to optimize that window, rather than trying to be busy, but not productive, all the time. Finally, I think we will see a wider adoption at a national level of Finland PM’s proposal for a four-day six-hour work weeks.

‘I thought I was smarter than almost everybody’: my double life as a KGB agent [The Guardian article]

Fascinating story of a KGB agent’s life. I found it interesting that the State allows to disclose some information about the work to a spouse, but nothing to own biological mother. It’s also incredible how much cognitive load keeping a disguise must take.

Why New Year’s Resolutions Are Bullshit [Medium post]

By tying your “transformation” to an arbitrary date, you’ve already lost.” – ’nuff said.

Wi-Fi 6 [How-To Geek article]

Wi-Fi has versions now. A great move from Wi-Fi alliance to make protocols / standards easy to understand to the end-consumer by simply versioning Wi-Fi protocols instead of using IEEE specification names (like 802.11ac, 802.11n, etc). Bigger is always better!

Apparatus for Facilitating the Birth of a Child by Centrifugal Force [Patent]

I wonder if they ever tested the device for real…

Breaking Into a Smart Home With A Laser – Smarter Every Day 229 [YouTube video]

Unexpected behavior of MEMS microphones when aimed at with a laser. Basically, an attacker can easily execute the following actions over 110 meters, including through property windows [1]:

  • Control smart home switches
  • Open smart garage doors
  • Make online purchases
  • Remotely unlock and start certain vehicles
  • Open smart locks by stealthily brute forcing the user’s PIN number.
